NME claims that Twentieth Century Fox have picked up the project after securing the rights ahead of Universal, who also wanted to make the film.
The project is not expected to be a biopic about the band's career but rather to follow a similar vein to the recent musical success Mamma Mia!, which used ABBA's music as the inspiration for an original story.
Hairspray and Annie producing team Craig Zadan and Neil Meron are rumoured to be in line to take on the project, while Susannah Grant will reportedly script the film.
The film is currently untitled and no further details have been announced regarding the premise or expected release date.
