Slits to release 'last ever song'

Ex-Slits star Viv Albertine has confirmed plans to release the "last ever Slits song".

Albertine played guitar in the initially all-girl punk group from 1976 until their original split in 1981.

She did not rejoin the band when frontwoman Ari Up reformed The Slits with bassist Tessa Pollitt and new members in 2006. Ari Up died last week at the age of 48.

Writing on Twitter, Albertine said: "Me and Tessa are going to release last ever Slits song 'Coulda Shoulda Woulda' from 1981 on cassette. We will hand draw covers. A healing thing."

In a recent MySpace post, Albertine paid tribute to Ari Up, saying: "My relationship with Ari is up there in the top five most difficult relationships of my life. It was also the most productive and creative relationship I have ever had.

"Throughout the last 30 years there were many people who tried to suppress and squash Ari. No one succeeded. She was reviled, mocked and criticised for daring to be herself.

"She could not and would not be tamed. It scared people. It scared men. She was stabbed and attacked in the street so many times. For just emanating too much WILD STUFF. Ari was the most dynamic woman I have ever known."
