The singer, whose breakthrough US hit 'Down' features Lil Wayne, describes himself as "quintessentially British" and doesn't feel comfortable cursing in his songs.
"You know what, they find it endearing that I'm quintessentially British," he told X Magazine.
"They find it funny that we're from such different worlds - ultimately they know I'm not trying hard to fit in, not trying to be them, so they respect me for that."
Asked if their swearing embarasses him, he replied: "Yes. Not blush, but it's awkward - for Americans, every other word is a curse. Especially rappers."
Sean, whose current single 2012 is number 33 in the US singles chart, recently put his success down to being a "bloody hard worker".
