Speaking to Radio 1, Grohl said that Novoselic has recorded a bass line on a track for the upcoming project.
He also said that Butch Vig, who last worked with Grohl on Nirvana's 1991 LP Nevermind, is producing the record, as well as filming a documentary about the process.
Grohl explained: "The last month and a half we've been in my garage recording totally old-school analogue with Butch Vig.
"This whole project has been really cool because I haven't made a record with Butch in 20 years, almost exactly 20 years."
The former Nirvana drummer added that the new album will be the Foo Fighters' "heaviest yet".
