Nadine Coyle has admitted that being in Girls Aloud did not allow her to express herself, as it was "more about miming" performances than singing.

Ealier this month, Coyle revealed that she would always record vocals before her bandmates, at the request of Xenomania's Brian Higgins.

"I would do hours and hours, layering vocals and stacking them together," she further explained to The Telegraph. "Brian decided he could get more work done if it was just me and him in the studio, and then the girls would come in at the end and sing on top."

She confessed that this process had caused problems.

"It was difficult, definitely, because we all began in a competition, so everybody feels justified, like, 'I'm a singer and the public voted for me'.

"But you don't have time to feel sorry for yourself, because you’re all working as hard as each other. Singing is only a small part of it. After a while, you realise it's more about miming on TV and doing a cute dance routine."

Coyle, who is set to release her debut solo album Insatiable next month, added that she had been able to "express herself" more through her own material.

"In Girls Aloud, Brian wasn't into ad libs or any kind of inflexions on the notes," she said. "It had to be exactly how it was written. So this was a lot more fun. I can really express myself, knowing other people’s voices don’t have to be put on as well."

Nadine releases her first solo single 'Insatiable' on November 1.
