The 42-year-old, who rejoined the group with Gary Barlow, Mark Owen and Jason Orange in 2005, suggested that the 'Angels' singer has always been unpredictable.
He told The Guardian: "It was amazing to see Rob and everything, but at the end of the day, I didn't really know him.
"So whatever we talked about, it was all very exciting, obviously, we all wanted to do it and I wanted to do it. But in the back of my mind I was thinking, well, he could do anything tomorrow."
