Ray Davies has been announced as the director of next year's Meltdown festival.

The former Kinks star will curate the 2011 event at London's Southbank Centre.

Organisers said: "Lead singer and rhythm guitarist with The Kinks, acclaimed solo artist, actor, director and storyteller, Ray Davies has written some of the most enduring songs in rock and pop history.

"Feted by successive generations of musicians - from David Bowie and Pete Townshend to The Fall, The Jam, Blur and most recently Mumford & Sons - his prowess as a storyteller has also endeared him to auteur filmmakers like Wes Anderson and Wim Wenders."

Davies follows past curators including Richard Thompson, David Bowie, John Peel, Jarvis Cocker, Nick Cave, Patti Smith and Morrissey.

The full lineup for the June 2011 event will be announced early next year.

Davies was recently forced to cancel a US tour due to a medical condition.
