The X Factor winner, who releases the single in physical CD format today, sold almost 170,000 digital copies of the Biffy Clyro cover in the two days since it went on sale.
Cardle's sales are three times that of his closest rival, Rihanna's 'What's My Name?', while The Trashmen's 'Surfin' Bird' completes the top three following a lengthy Facebook campaign.
After their performance on last week's X Factor final, Take That sit at six with 'The Flood', and Biffy Clyro's original version of Cardle's track - called 'Many Of Horror' - soars to six, after being a top 20 hit 11 months ago.
An interpretation of John Cage's '4′33" (Cage Against The Machine)' lands at 18, Rihanna's 'Unfaithful' re-enters the chart after a four year absence at 19, while Corey Taylor's 'X-M@$' debuts at 34.
On the album chart, Take That's Progress continues to reign the chart. The band's latest effort is on course to sell 1.5 million copies by next week.
Meanwhile, Michael Jackson's Michael enters at three, and Robbie Williams' Greatest Hits: In And Out Of Consciousness is course to chart at number six.
Their final chart positions will be announced on Sunday between 4pm and 7pm.
