BBC News quotes Diamond, whose biggest hits include 'Sweet Caroline' and 'Cracklin' Rosie', as saying that he was "glad they did it before I'm dead".
"I kind of figured they'd get around to me at some point. [I was] a lone voice out there with a guitar, and it was different than what was going on because it was the English invasion and I wasn't doing that," the 69-year-old singer added.
Cooper also said that it had been "a waiting game". The 69-year-old, famous for hits such as 'Poison' and 'School's Out', said that his band "brought theatre to rock 'n' roll" in the 1970s.
Other inductees include American singer-songwriter Tom Waits, ex-The Crystals singer Darlene Love and blues singer Dr John. The awards ceremony is due to take place in March.
