Government reveals US pop invasion plans
Published Thursday, Feb 23 2006, 15:22 GMT | By Dave West
The government has revealed plans to boost our music industry by funding 12 bands to go to the US.
It is spending £500,000 to send the artists – including KT Tunstall and Goldfrapp – to a Texas music festival aimed at talent scouts.
Ministers hope the move will further boost Britain's pop music export market.
"From the Beatles, through David Bowie to Coldplay, the UK music scene has always led the world," explained Trade and Industry Secretary Alan Johnson. "But we have not always capitalised on our talent to break America.
"I want to ensure that the Government works with the industry and our best artists to showcase talent in the US."
Other acts heading for the South by Southwest festival in Austin next month are The Kooks, The Rakes, Jim Noir, The Feeling and Boy Kill Boy.
In the past the festival has boosted such names as James Blunt, Kaiser Chiefs and The Darkness.
