Arctic Monkeys score three NME Awards

The Arctic Monkeys were the big winners at last night's ShockWaves NME Awards 2006, taking three awards home.
The Sheffield band took the awards for best track (I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor) and for best new band, beating the likes of Maximo Park, The Magic Numbers, Editors and We Are Scientists. Most surprisingly they also took the award for best British band, their rapid rise taking them above fellow nominees Kaiser Chiefs, Bloc Party, Oasis and Franz Ferdinand.
Arctic Monkeys' ascension to such acclaim has been swift to say the least. Their debut album, Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not, was released just a month ago and became the fastest-selling album in chart history, with over 360,000 copies being sold in its first week.
Although nominated in six categories, Leeds-based Kaiser Chiefs were only presented with one award, that for best album (Employment). However, singer Ricky Wilson was awarded a 'best dressed' prize.
Franz Ferdinand beat Arctic Monkeys to the title of best live band, whilst The Strokes were named best international band.
Former Stone Roses frontman Ian Brown was given a Godlike Genius Award. Less favoured acts James Blunt and Son of Dork walked away with the less thrilling prizes of worst album (Back to Bedlam) and worst band respectively, the former fighting off stiff competition from McFly and Babyshambles.
