The supergroup made up of David Crosby, Stephen Stills and Graham Nash were believed to have part-completed an album of covers, featuring songs by Bob Dylan, The Beatles, Rolling Stones and the Grateful Dead.
An official band statement read: "We have amicably parted ways with both Rick Rubin and Columbia."
While no reason was given for the split, insiders suggested to the Daily Express that the trio were frustrated by Rubin's attention being diverted by his work on Kid Rock's new album and other projects.
