Prestwich, who was the drummer of Australian band Cold Chisel, died after failing to regain consciousness from an operation on a brain tumour at the weekend.
Hirst told The Daily Telegraph: "Steve Prestwich and [bandmate] Phil Small together were one of our finest rhythm sections in Australian rock and roll and blues. He was a fine songwriter to boot and we will all miss him terribly."
Prestwich's bandmate Jimmy Barnes yesterday revealed that he would "miss" his friend very much.
