The hitmaker, who who has previously teamed up with Amy Winehouse and Lily Allen, said he already has a "great idea" for the record, which is slated for release later this year.
"I'm working on the new Daniel Merriweather record as well as The Black Lips and Rufus Wainright," he told the Daily Star.
"I don't want to jump the gun, but I've an idea for Rufus. He's great for a producer as he offers such a great palette."
Rufus's last effort All Days Are Nights: Songs for Lulu peaked at number 21 on the UK album chart last March.
The 'Bike Song' star is currently producing Culture Club's comeback LP.
