Geldof 'doesn't care about chart success'

Sir Bob Geldof has claimed that he never worries about his music achieving commercial success.

In an interview with The Quietus, Geldof explained that he learned early in his career not concern himself with appealing to a wide audience.

"I don't consider the charts," he said.

The former Boomtown Rats frontman continued: "I don't look at them, they just don't interest me at all. And it's odd because that was it back in the day. We'd go to the label and go, 'How many tickets are we selling? Is it more than The Clash? Did we sell out faster than The Jam?' It was that!

"And I know people still like that. George Michael is still like that; he's fascinated by pop music and he listens to all of it. He says, 'Did you hear that?' and I just could not give a w**k."

While the band never attained widespread commercial appeal in the US, the Boomtown Rats scored five UK top 10 hits including 'I Don't Like Mondays' and 'Banana Republic'.

Earlier this week, Geldof revealed that focusing on music helped him to grieve his ex-wife Paula Yates's death.
