The drop in tickets sales follows the departure of Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong, who left the cast on February 27.
For the first week after Armstrong's exit from the show, sales dropped from $1.3 million (£805,000) to $395,275 (£244,600) for its regular eight-performance weekly schedule, reports Billboard.
It has been claimed that a drop-off rate that steep would usually lead to the closing of a Broadway musical.
Armstrong recently revealed that he wants to create another musical with the director of the American Idiot Broadway production, Michael Mayer.
