Guy Garvey has said that winning the Mercury Prize in 2008 helped Elbow to put together their new album with ease.

Speaking to BBC Radio 1's Newsbeat, the band's frontman and lyricist said that the positive response to The Seldom Seen Kid's triumph made the Manchester five-piece feel "very loved".

He said: "Winning the Mercury was so important to us. There's usually quite a lot of controversy over the Mercury winner in the press the next day. Everyone seemed to think it was the right choice which made us feel very loved and wanted.

"We made this album with an air of excitement and confidence. That's why it was the easiest to make."

Garvey also admitted that he didn't think that their new record Build A Rocket Boys!, which was released on Monday, would do as well as its predecessor.

"[The] Seldom Seen Kid won so many awards and did so well that we're not expecting this one to do anything like as well," he added.

"We're just hoping the hardcore of people that have bought all of our albums over the last ten years like it as much as we do."
