The singer-songwriter announced last year that the group had reformed and the band later confirmed that they were recording new music.
Cornell has now told Billboard that the group are now "pretty far into our record".
"I don't really know how to describe it musically," he said, "Because typically with Soundgarden... every time we write a song we always take it for what it is and try to make it the most it can be. It's very diverse, I can tell you that."
Of a release date for the album, the follow-up to 1996's Down on the Upside, Cornell added: "We went into this with the idea that we wouldn't worry about scheduling or timing. We would worry about making a great record - that's kind of where we're at... let the album decide when it's done."
Soundgarden formed 1984 in Seattle and split in 1997 after five studio releases. The group this week released their first live album, Live On 15, featuring tracks from their 1996 West Coast tour.
