The 'Rope' band, who are due to release their seventh studio album on April 11 in the UK and April 12 in the US, explained that the record doesn't sound like the Swedish pop band, but rather the construction of their new songs were based on Abba's use of "big choruses".
"I like loads of crazy-ass, dissonant, distorted rock 'n' roll. But I also love the Bee Gees and Abba, bands whose pop choruses get bigger and bigger," frontman Dave Grohl told the Daily Star.
"I love anthemic choruses, that overwhelming feeling of release that you can connect with.
"So whenever I thought I had a big enough chorus for a song, I would use that as the pre-chorus and then I would try and write something even bigger, like they did."
The group worked with longtime friend and Nirvana producer Butch Vig on the record, to help maintain their trademark heavy rock sound.
"This album was about getting back to that balls-to-the-wall madness. I did an interview where I said the songs had heavy riffs and Butch read it and said: 'Well, it's going to have to be heavy then, you've done it now'," Grohl added.
Grohl recently admitted that recording the new LP at home was a "joy". The band have also made their new album available to stream online ahead of its release.
