The Bee Gees singer was rushed to hospital on Sunday morning with severe abdominal pains. A representative for the star confirmed that he has since returned home but has been advised not to travel by doctors.
The spokesman said: "In the early morning [Robin] had terrible pain and he was feeling very ill. A paramedic came out and he was taken to hospital.
"We are not sure what's wrong with him at this stage and are worried."
Gibb had surgery last year to alleviate a blocked intestine. His twin brother Maurice died aged 53 in 2003 following complications resulting from a twisted intestine.
However, the musician's spokesperson added: "We don't know if it is a recurrence of the previous problem or if it is something else entirely."
A statement on Gibb's official website says that he has postponed half a dozen shows, including two in Sao Paolo. He was also due to meet with Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff.
It was reported last month that Gibb had signed up for the Butterfly Benefit - a charity show in aid of Cauldwell Children - alongside Gary Barlow and Robbie Williams. The concert will take place on May 12.
