The Foo Fighters frontman said that he was recording a track with former Nirvana bandmate Krist Novoselic for the group's new album Wasting Light, when they decided to play some classic Nirvana songs.
"I just thought, 'What a trip to sit with Krist and Butch [Vig] and Pat [Smear] in the studio together', because that was never supposed to happen again," Grohl told Entertainment Weekly.
"I hadn't played that song in 18 years, I haven't even played the drum beat to that song in 18 years," he admitted. "We ended the song and look at each other like, 'That was strange'."
Nirvana officially disbanded in 1994 after the suicide of frontman Kurt Cobain, after which drummer Grohl went on to form the Foo Fighters. Bassist Novoselic played in various bands, as well as becoming active in politics.
The two former Nirvana members collaborated on the track 'I Should Have Known' from Wasting Light, which was released earlier this month.
