The Death Magnetic band have revealed that they are to start work on their tenth studio album later this year and are planning to work with the Columbia Records co-president on new material.
"Yeah. I love working with Rick. Rick, to me, he's sort of a Zen guru spirit that Metallica needs right now," bassist Robert Trujillo told KCLB-FM.
"Not to say that we need it, because we're getting along incredibly well - we're really excited to write some new music.
"There's no shortage of riffage in Metallica World right now, and I think it's only gonna get better."
Rubin is currently working on the new Red Hot Chili Peppers album, which has been given a working title of Dr Johnny Skinz's Disproportionately Rambunctious Polar Express Machine-head.
Rubin's previous production credits include Jay-Z's The Black Album, Justin Timberlake's FutureSex/LoveSounds, Linkin Park's Minutes to Midnight and, more recently, Adele's record-breaking sophomore album 21.
