Last week, Twain revealed that she is undergoing extensive rehabilitation in order to repair damage to her vocal chords.
The country music star has now told Access Hollywood that a lifetime of suppressing her emotions and not taking adequate care of her voice physically "manifested itself" as a sort of "bottleneck" in her throat.
In spite of the discouraging diagnosis, the musician insisted that her doctors believe she will be able to sing once again after extensive treatment.
"Apparently, I will sing again," Twain said. "It will take a lot of work. I've gotten to the bottom of it [now]."
She continued: "I've discovered a lot... The 'Why Not?' tour [promoting her OWN series]... was a whole educational experience for me. [I learned] what was wrong and what I can do about it by identifying [the cause]."
While Twain plans to return to music once her vocal chords are fully healed, she cautioned that fans shouldn't expect to see her performing in the immediate future.
"[Right now,] I would have a very inconsistent sound. I might get the odd right note out and then I might get a note that's out of control," she remarked.
Twain added: "It's that genuine choked up feeling that when you go to speak at a moment of anxiety, a squeak comes out or something that surprises you that's not really your voice."
Earlier this week, Twain revealed that her ex-husband Robert 'Mutt' Lange wasn't necessarily in favour of getting a divorce even after he engaged in an extramarital affair.
Why Not? with Shania Twain continues Sunday on OWN.
