Archie Roach is to be honoured at a special awards ceremony in Sydney tonight.
The Australian singer and songwriter, who is best known for his 1990 hit song 'Took the Children Away', will receive the $50,000 (£32,500) Red Ochre award in recognition of his contribution to Indigenous arts and culture.
Roach told The ABC: "Especially coming from your own people, Aboriginal people - it's great to be recognised for the work that you've done.
"I think it would be a good time to actually just stop moving around a bit and probably [start] writing a bit more - good creative time to actually get some things up and going. So it would be a good time just to be able to sit back and be able to do that without financial worry."
Roach performed at music festival Womadelaide in March this year alongside artists including Martha Wainwright, Ukrainian group DakhaBrakha, Brazilian band Os Mutantes and Nathalie Natiembé, who hails from the island of Réunion.
It was recently revealed that Roach's fellow musician Paul Kelly will be receiving a prize for his outstanding services to the Australian music industry at this year's APRA Awards.
