Rihanna has spoken out on the controversy surrounding her new video for 'Man Down'.

The video, which sees the singer shoot a man at a train station before revealing the preceding events of the day, has been heavily criticised by the Parents Television Council for 'accepting murder'.

Rihanna responded to the allegations via her Twitter page on Thursday, writing: "I'm a 23 year old rockstar with NO KIDS! What's up with everybody wantin' me to be a parent? I'm just a girl, I can only be your/our voice! (sic)

"Cuz we all know how difficult/embarrassing it is to communicate touchy subject matters to anyone especially our parents! The music industry isn't exactly Parents R Us! We have the freedom to make art, LET US!"

Rihanna also put the onus on parents to instil values in their children, and encouraged older family members not to "hide" young people from the "real world", adding: "Its your job to make sure they dont turn out like US. U can't hide your kids from society, or they'll never learn how to adapt! This is the REAL WORLD."
