The 24-year-old singer-songwriter has been working on the follow-up to his 2009 number one LP Sunny Side Up over the past few months and has admitted that his work has developed a new sound.
Nutini told the Daily Record: "It could be finished soon. I have been trying some stuff out, working with different people. It could all go pretty quickly.
"I have played it to friends and, based on what I have heard back, it is a different vibe. There seems to be a lot more electric guitar.
"It is hard for me to talk about it as a body of work at the moment because it isn't one. We're at that point where it could still change."
Nutini also explained that he is looking to "evoke the feeling [he] wants to get across" with the material in the hope that if he feels comfortable with what he is performing, his fans will "really enjoy the gigs".
Nutini will headline this weekend's RockNess music festival in Scotland, as well as playing the main stage at this year's Glastonbury festival on June 25.
