Plan to release last Cash work

The last song written by Johnny Cash before his death - 'Like the 309' - will be released on a new album.

Producer Rick Rubin recorded album American V: A Hundred Highways with the rockabilly veteran in the months before he died in September 2003. He said it was important to release the work.

"These songs are Johnny's final statement," he explained in a statement. "They are the truest reflection of the music that was central to his life at the time. This is the music that Johnny wanted us to hear."

'Like the 309', referring to the classic country topic of trains, is one of two Cash penned songs on the album, along with 'I Came to Believe'. As throughout the American Recordings series, Cash originals are accompanied by covers, this time including songs by artists including Bruce Springsteen and Hank Williams.

"I think that American V may be my favourite of all of the albums in the American series," Rubin added. "It's different from the others, it has a much different character. I think that this is as strong an album as Johnny ever made."

It is set for a summer release on American Recordings/Lost Highway.
