Townshend's guitar was just one of many items sold as part of a rock memorabilia auction at Christie's in London on Tuesday.
David Bowie's handwritten lyrics for 'Sweet Thing/Candidate/Sweet Thing Reprise' from the Diamond Dogs LP, a diary signed by members of the Jimi Hendrix Experience, and Dee Dee Ramone's signature bass all fetched thousands at the public sale.
A drum set destroyed by Kurt Cobain after a 1991 Nirvana gig also proved popular, taking $13,000 (£7,995).
Personal items once owned by The Beatles, The Sex Pistols, Led Zeppelin and Michael Jackson were also sold as part of the auction.
Who guitarist Townshend announced in May that he plans to release his long-anticipated autobiography next year.
