The music company, recently acquired by Citigroup, is said to be facing a review, which could include possible recapitalisation, stock market flotation or a straightforward sale, according to Metro.
The British label, who boasts The Beatles, Katy Perry, Coldplay and Tinie Tempah among its signed artists, could fetch between £1.5 billion and £2.4 billion.
It has been speculated that possible bidders for the ailing record label could include rival companies the Universal Music Group, Sony Corp and Warner Music Group.
Warner, which has just undergone a takeover itself, has previously approached EMI about a potential takeover bid.
Citigroup has previously insisted that it will not split EMI into its music and publishing divisions when selling the company.
