The 'Human' band will top the bill later tonight on the opening day of the rock music festival in London's Hyde Park.
The indie-rock four-piece have already started work on the follow-up to 2008's Day & Age, with the band's drummer Ronnie Vannucci revealing that they may premiere a track or two at the show.
"Hard Rock Calling is a f**king great show - I love that show. We're having our cake and eating it too," he told the Daily Star.
"These intimate gigs are sweaty, where everyone's like five feet away and you can see the whites of their eyes. You really connect on a more immediate and personal level.
"But when you have 70,000 people, your gestures have to be bigger. It's so important about being able to address a group, making a group feel as one."
Vannucci then added: "And that's something that's a learned thing, we're still trying to get our heads around it. As for us playing new songs, we might have a surprise for you."
Speaking more generally about how recording for the record is going, the drummer explained: "We know this next album has gotta be good and we can't wait too long of course."
The band recently revealed plans to perform a handful of solo songs during their set.
