The 'Happy' star is currently working on her third collection, having spent time in the studio with collaborators including Ryan Tedder, Dallas Austin, Autumn Rowe and Rico Love.
"I wanted to put my heart into my lyrics," Lewis explained to Reveal magazine. "So most of my new album has a darker tone to it. It's not just about my ex, or any one person, it's a mix of emotions."
However, the 26-year-old added: "But it's not all sad. I'm in a really happy place right now, so there are some upbeat tracks, too."
Speaking last year, Lewis stated that her new material will be "quite up-tempo but still very song-based".
Asked by a fan during a question-and-answer session on Twitter to describe the album in three words, the Echo singer chose "energetic, deep, unique", before naming her main influences as Tears for Fears, Kate Bush and Tracy Chapman.
