The singer, who recently made a comeback with Britpop band Pulp, said that he used to be too "profound" until the accident helped make him able to write lyrics about "everyday normal" things.
Cocker told FaberBooks: "My breakthrough really came when I stopped thinking, 'Oh, I've got to be profound', and just started writing about everyday normal things. That was precipitated by an accident where I ended up falling out of a window and being in hospital for about a month. I really did come down to earth."

The 'Do You Remember The First Time?' musician admitted that he had been having "anxiety dreams" about the reunion of Pulp, adding: "I've not had the one of being naked on stage yet."
Pulp recently returned to Glastonbury music festival with a surprise performance. The band's first three studio albums will also be reissued this year with new artwork and liner notes from Everett True.
Cocker recently signed a contract to release a collection of lyrics called Mother, Brother, Lover: Selected Lyrics. The book is due for release this October.
