Michelle Branch 'challenged herself' on new album

Michelle Branch has said that she tried to challenge herself while recording her first pop album in eight years.

Since the break-up of her country duo The Wreckers, Branch has been working on a new solo album, and has said that the record will definitely surprise her older fans.

"[I] just wanted to get as far away from my comfort zone as possible," Branch explained to Billboard.

The singer avoided working with previous collaborators John Leventhal and John Shanks on the album in order to give herself more of a challenge.

"I was just like, 'Y'know what? I want to work with people that I've never met before and I don't know and get completely as far away from what I've already done as possible'," Branch continued.

She eventually chose British duo Julian Emery and Jim Irvin to produce West Coast Time.

"We completely hit it off and they ended up writing and producing more than half the record with me," Branch revealed.

"[I have] a lot to set out and prove again," she added, regarding her return to the pop genre for the first time since 2003.

Michelle Branch will release her fourth solo album West Coast Time this September.
