The guitarist labelled the break-up of the band as "stupid" and revealed that the group didn't fall out over personal issues, but rather that the increasing popularity surrounding them caused conflict.
"The reason the band broke up was really stupid in the first place, it's not like anybody had sex with each other's wives, though for how bad we hated each other that should have been what happened," DeLonge told BBC Radio 1's Zane Lowe.
"The band got so big that the machine running the band took over. We were burnt out, we needed a break, but the machine won't let you do that. The band had stopped communicating because the machine was so big."
The punk-pop trio confirmed their reunion in 2009 and are now currently preparing to release their sixth studio album Neighborhoods on September 27.
Talking about the record, DeLonge explained: "It's very modern, very relevant to rock music today, but we made sure to throw a couple of songs in there that sound like they're from the mid-'90s. It's gigantic, it's made for big places."
The band recently debuted the album's lead single 'Up All Night' and have since admitted that they were not expecting the positive response it received.
