The Nirvana frontman was in line to be commemorated by his childhood hometown, with the Aderdeen City Council in Washington deciding on whether to name a local bridge and park after the star.
However, the council voted 10/1 against the re-naming and the bridge will instead remain known under its unofficial name of Alexander Young after the pioneer, reports The AP.
Eight citizens showed up to the council meeting to protest against the plans, while the council members voiced their concerns of naming a bridge after a drug-abusing musician.
Cobain will still be honoured in Aberdeen, with a small patch of land near the bridge to be named the Cobain Landing.
A super deluxe edition of Nirvana's popular album Nevermind will receive a limited release this September to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the record's original debut.
