The Cesar-winning actor stars in its director Romain Gavras's first feature film Our Day Will Come, which also uses the metaphor of anti-ginger prejudice. The film is available on DVD from August 22.
Asked if he found the 'Born Free' promo funny or shocking, Cassel told Digital Spy: "I think it's both really. If you take it on the first degree it's really scary and totally crazy.
"But the fact that it's about redheads, it's really strange [and] that makes it funny, I guess. It's because it doesn't mean anything."
Cassel added: "If it would have been with any kind of community it would have been terrible, but suddenly it's redheads, so it's like a symbol of a quest that doesn't really exist."
