The campaign seeks to increase the number of American students studying abroad in Asian countries.
The 'Just Can't Get Enough' musician met with US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in Washington DC on Friday and agreed to support the policy by headlining a special gig in China later this year, the State Department announced.
The concert, which is to feature other Chinese and American musicians, will be organised by Americans Promoting Study Abroad.
A date for the show will be announced in the coming months.
will.i.am previously toured China twice before with the Black Eyed Peas in 2006 and 2009.
The Black Eyed Peas are currently on a hiatus, but will.i.am has vowed that the group will work together again in the future.
