The 25-year-old Australian singer, whose mother is Grease star Olivia Newton-John, recently caused controversy by including graphic suicidal and domestic violence images in the clip for 'Play With Me'.
Matt told New Idea: "It's quite bizarre. I watched it and I went, 'What the?' I was curious, like anybody would be, as to what is going on in Chloe that she feels the need to express herself so graphically."
Talking about her past problems including anorexia, he said: "A lot of her torture was manifested because of the depths of her soul and her feelings were so acute. She felt things more intensely. I think she expresses things the same way through her art."
Matt said that he has seen Chloe in a "tortured place" in previous years, but added: "Right now she is not in that place - especially because of this very balanced relationship she's in [with James Driskill]. In fact, I think she is able to express herself about these dark places with more confidence."
Chloe hit back at her critics recently, saying: "I don't want to kill myself, I don't want to die... it's all just in the name of fun. Some people are taking it a little too seriously and getting preachy. But it is an artist's job to challenge ideas."
