The 'Grenade' singer will join previously-announced performers Adele, Lil' Wayne and Chris Brown at the Nokia Theater in Los Angeles on Sunday, August 28.
MTV has also announced the first list of presenters during the evening. Moneyball actor Jonah Hill, rapper Rick Ross, Selena Gomez, Seth Rogen, Kim Kardashian and Odd Future will all be handing out awards at the 2011 ceremony.
Executive producer Amy Doyle said: "We're thrilled to have Bruno Mars bring his exceptional talent to the VMA stage. He is one of the most exciting live performers today and with his artistic versatility, he will undoubtedly deliver a standout performance."
Bruno Mars is nominated for several awards at the VMAs, and recently said that it would be the "coolest thing ever" to win the prize for 'Best Choreography' for his track 'The Lazy Song'.
