The star, who tragically died at the age of 27 last month, will apparently be "acknowledged" at the event at Los Angeles' Nokia Theater on August 28.
Speaking to Billboard about Winehouse, VMAs executive producer Amy Doyle explained: "We had a great history with Amy. She was very near and dear to us."
Doyle also confirmed plans for a Britney Spears tribute at this year's event, after reports speculating the inclusion of a video montage of the star would be screened appeared online last week.
"Britney will be at the show and we'll be paying tribute to her," Doyle said.
"She was having an incredible year and she is so beloved by the MTV audience that we started to think what could we do that would be a different experience [from years past]."
She added: "Obviously everything from her choreography to her fashion to her videos will be [covered]. We said, 'Let's challenge ourselves to do something unique'."
A host for this year's event has yet to be announced. Previous MTV VMA ceremonies have been presented by comedian Chelsea Handler and actor Russell Brand.
