Richard Turner, who was the band's session trumpet player, died after suffering cardiac arrest last Thursday (August 11).
The musician, aged 27, had been swimming at an open air pool in South London when he became ill.
Despite the efforts of the pool's lifeguard and emergency service paramedics, Turner was unable to be resuscitated and later died at King's College Hospital.
Friendly Fires said on their official website: "On Friday we learnt of the sudden passing of Richard Turner.
"Rich played trumpet in our live gigs on and off for three years. He was an utterly exceptional musician and his contributions to our shows will be hugely missed. He was also an accomplished and admired composer."
They added: "On tour he was much envied for his ability to fall asleep at will, however uncomfortable the bus, plane, car or train. RIP to an unbelievable musician and friend."
Friendly Fires posted a clip of Turner's own band Round Trip on the site as a tribute.
