The X Factor 2010 champion decided to play the gigs to warm up for his performance during the first live show of this year's singing competition in October.
"Matt wanted to get used to playing in front of an audience again," a source told The Sun.
"He performed to millions on The X Factor but he thought it would be good to get back up there - and fun too."
The 28-year-old will release his first album since winning the talent show last December on October 17.
The record, titled Letters, will include his new single 'Run For Your Life', which was written by Take That's Gary Barlow and will be available to download on October 10.
