The New Jersey band were performing in Chicago on Saturday when singer Gerard Way announced their plans to record a new album, according to Absolute Punk.
An audience member wrote: "Last night at the Honda Civic Tour, My Chemical Romance's Gerard Way announced that they wouldn't be back in Chicago for quite a while because they're going to record a new album after this tour."
The group are currently on a US tour along with the reunited Blink-182, and will headline the Reading and Leeds Festivals next weekend.
The UK festival appearance may be the band's final live commitment before returning to the studio to record the follow-up to Danger Days (The True Lives Of The Fabulous Killjoys).
My Chemical Romance have also performed at Radio 1's Big Weekend and the iTunes Festival in the UK earlier this year.
