The former Sonny with a Chance actress told Ryan Seacrest's radio show on KIIS-FM that she has been approached by fans of all ages who have been touched by the song.
Lovato said: "After 'Skyscraper' was released I feel like it definitely opened by my audience a little bit.
"I was no longer just hearing from the younger demographic. I was hearing, 'That song inspired me and I'm a 45-year-old who has dealt with this issue' or 'I'm a 26-year-old girl who is struggling with issues'."
The 19-year-old added: "It really inspired me even more to just continue to make music and everything because it took off and had its own journey and it was just incredible, I was really excited."
