The rapper initially announced plans to release his upcoming record in the US on August 30, but will now make the album available to download following his performance at this weekend's MTV Video Music Awards.
The ceremony will take place at LA's Nokia Theatre on August 28. Lil Wayne revealed that Tha Carter IV will be released digitally after the show at midnight.
"I am extremely excited to be the first artist to utilise such an amazing idea. I hope that I can open the door for others," he said.
Cash Money Records executive Ronald Williams added: "Wayne is one of the most respected and prolific artists in the industry. By pairing the release of Tha Carter IV with the VMAs, it will certainly add to the overall anticipation and excitement for fans everywhere for what will surely be an unforgettable evening."
Lil Wayne recently claimed that he may retire from the music industry in the near future so he can concentrate on spending more time with his family.
