The singer topped the poll compiled by Rolling Stone, which asked readers to vote for their least favourite song covered by another artist.
Cyrus, who performed the track on her latest world tour, said: "I want to play a song by one of the artists that inspired me. Without them I wouldn't be here.
"They are the ones who gave me the strength and courage to do this. I hope I can be that person for you guys."
Avril Lavigne's rendition of John Lennon's 'Imagine' and Madonna's chart-topping cover of Don McLean's 'American Pie' were among the other performances on the list.
Cyrus, who was born over a year after the track from Nirvana's Nevermind album came out, has previously covered 'On Melancholy Hill' by Gorillaz and Fleetwood Mac's 'Landslide'.
