My Chemical Romance have admitted that they want to prove themselves at this year's Reading and Leeds festivals.

The band were bottled off stage when they played Reading in 2006, but insisted that they are determined to win over the crowds during their headline slots this weekend.

Frontman Gerard Way told the Daily Star: "We haven't felt like we've had anything to prove in a long time, so maybe this is the right time to do that. We're closing a festival where not everyone has approved of us in the past."

The singer promised that the group would just play "everyone's favourite songs" and is confident that "putting on a great show" will be enough to please punters.

Way added: "We don't grow up with these kind of festivals in the States so this amazing event that goes on for days where you discover amazing new bands all day and night long means a lot."

The star also ensured fans that the band would not take as long to record their next album as they did to release 2010's Danger Days.

"We've got a lot of new songs already. When we finished Danger Days we were sad in a weird way because we felt like we were just getting started. Those songs might yet see the light of day," Way said.

My Chemical Romance previously announced plans to start work on their new album this autumn.
