The 49-year-old singer-songwriter, who has previously branded today's music stars "a bunch of fairies", said that he believes he created a rebellious persona in the 'Madchester' band.
Speaking to The Guardian, he said: "The Shaun Ryder in the Happy Mondays isn't the real Shaun Ryder.
"It's a caricature. Always has been. We really wanted to be rock 'n' roll, so we became rock 'n' roll. It's a stretched, warped version of [myself]."
When the Happy Mondays split in 1993, Ryder descended into drug addiction.
The former I'm a Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here contestant's autobiography Twisting My Melon, which charts the time from the end of the Happy Mondays to his reality TV career, was released yesterday.
