REM announced their official split earlier today, describing it as a mixture of "gratitude, finality and astonishment".
During their 31-year career together, the band released a total of 15 studio albums between 1983 and 2011. Their most influential songs include 'Everybody Hurts', 'Losing My Religion', 'Orange Crush' and 'The Great Beyond'.
The group, fronted by the flamboyant Michael Stipe, have performed to huge crowds at venues such as Hyde Park, Twickenham and Glastonbury, and have won a magnitude of awards.
