Buckingham and then-girlfriend Stevie Nicks joined Fleetwood Mac together in 1975, with their emotional break-up inspiring many songs on Rumours.
Fleetwood Mac's other couple, John McVie and Christine McVie, also separated prior to Rumours' release in 1977.
Guitarist Buckingham admitted that he has no idea how Fleetwood Mac survived so much emotional trauma.
"There is still emotional residue," he revealed to Parade. "It's a work in progress, and there is something beautiful in that. We had no business being in a band together, but our differences meshed."
In spite of their stormy past, Buckingham recently insisted that he and Nicks get on well these days.
Buckingham also disclosed that he has turned to indie music to avoid listening to the chart songs that his children enjoy.
"I got into college radio about a year and a half ago. Frankly, I was just looking for something to hear in the car besides Katy Perry, who my kids like," the 'Big Love' singer said.
Mick Fleetwood has revealed that Fleetwood Mac are planning to tour next year.
